Detailed Duties and Responsibilities Field Rangers are the eyes, ears, and hands of conservation on the ground. Your key duties will include: Assisting with the protection of nature reserves and their natural resources against threats such as poaching, illegal activities, and encroachment. Conducting regular law enforcement patrols and anti-poaching operations. Inspecting and maintaining boundary fences to secure the reserves. Performing infrastructure maintenance (roads, hides, picnic sites, etc.). Managing visitor behaviour, ensuring compliance with reserve rules, and promoting responsible tourism. Reporting any non-compliance, incidents, or threats to senior management. Assisting with fire management, including firebreaks, controlled burning, and wildfire response. Supporting access control at reserve gates and entry points. Monitoring ecological processes, habitats, and biodiversity through data collection. Participating in ecological rehabilitation programmes (erosion control, alien plant removal, bush encroachment management). Assisting with wildlife management activities, including game monitoring and translocation. Conducting conservation management programmes such as water provision and habitat maintenance. Performing general maintenance and cleaning duties within the reserve. Working collaboratively with other rangers, scientists, and community stakeholders. Participating in community outreach and environmental education initiatives. Maintaining accurate daily records, patrol reports, and occurrence books. Ensuring personal and team safety at all times while operating in remote areas. The role involves extensive fieldwork, irregular hours, and physically demanding tasks in all weather conditions. Requirements for the Field Ranger Position Minimum Requirements: NQF Level 4 qualification (Grade 12 / ABET / AET Level 3 or equivalent) recognised by SAQA. Valid SAPS Firearm Competency Certificate (handgun, rifle, and shotgun). Valid driver’s licence (with exception for persons with disabilities). Physically fit and healthy with no medical conditions that may prevent field work. No criminal record. Conservation training certificate or qualification from an accredited institution (essential). Advantageous: Experience in conservation management programmes. Knowledge of nature reserve management and relevant national/provincial conservation legislation. Skills and Knowledge Required: Strong knowledge of conservation laws and policies. Ability to safely handle and use a firearm. Problem-solving and analytical skills. Client orientation and customer focus (especially with visitors and communities). Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
