Safe and reliable transportation is essential for learners who attend boarding or day schools far from home. Driver/Messengers are key members of the support team. They transport learners, deliver documents and supplies, and perform general messenger duties while maintaining high safety standards. Job Purpose To safely transport learners in special schools to and from school, deliver documents and goods, perform vehicle maintenance checks, and provide general messenger and support services. You will ensure compliance with traffic laws and departmental policies while maintaining the safety and well-being of learners during transit. Key Performance Areas As a Driver/Messenger, your core duties will include: Responsible for transporting learners in Special Schools to and from school following designated routes and schedules. Follow all traffic laws and drive defensively to ensure the safety of learners. Capable of communicating effectively with learners, parents, and school staff. Assist learners in safe loading and off-loading from the vehicle. Inform school personnel and parents of any incidents to maintain proper procedures. Perform pre-trip and post-trip inspections of the assigned vehicle. Supervise learners during transit for the purpose of maintaining safety and following departmental policies. Conduct safety and operational inspections of the assigned vehicle daily. Report needed mechanical repairs when necessary. Perform periodical safety drills as required by law and complete necessary reports. Delivery and collections: Collect and deliver documents, correspondence, mail, packages, and other items from places such as the post office, other departments, and external stakeholders. Purchase and loading: Buying and loading equipment and groceries for the institution. Health support: Taking learners to clinics and hospitals when required. Route Planning: Plan and follow the most efficient routes using maps or GPS to ensure timely delivery and avoid traffic delays. Vehicle Maintenance: Perform pre-trip and post-trip inspections, ensure the vehicle is fuelled, clean, and well-maintained, and report any issues or arrange for necessary repairs. Record Keeping: Complete and maintain all required records and logbooks regarding trips, mileage, fuel consumption, and goods handled. General Support: Assist with general office or clerical work, such as filing, making photocopies, running errands, or assisting with loading and unloading items. Customer Service: Interact with clients and customers in a professional and courteous manner, potentially collecting payments or obtaining signatures for deliveries. The role requires shift work and the ability to handle long hours of driving and learner supervision. Prerequisites Grade 12 / Matric Certificate. Valid Code 10 driver’s licence with PDP. 3 years’ bus driving experience will be an added advantage. Driver’s competency test will be conducted before appointment.
