Job Purpose To safely and efficiently rail transport ore and material in the area of responsibility in order to achieve safe, quality daily production objectives. As a Surface Train Driver, you will operate locomotives, perform inspections, and contribute to the smooth running of rail logistics while maintaining strict adherence to safety standards and company procedures. Key Responsibilities As a Train Driver (Surface 1065), your core duties will include: Rail Operations: Perform a thorough physical pre-use inspection on equipment as per the checklist (e.g., testing brakes, warning devices, electrical connections, emergency stops, and coupling attachments). Complete inspection checklists accurately and report any deficiencies to the supervisor immediately. Operate Surface Locomotives to transport ore, personnel, and material according to standards, procedures, and safety protocols. Maintain Safety, Health, and Environmental (SHE) practices in line with company standards and procedures at all times. Perform end-of-shift procedures, including parking and locking out the locomotive as per standard protocols and handing over keys at the designated location. Report on shift activities and any incidents or observations to the supervisor. Perform any additional activities necessary for the effective completion of duties and achievement of production targets. Stakeholder Relations: Build and maintain strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders at all levels. Ensure open and effective communication channels with team members, supervisors, and other departments. Financial Management and Cost Savings: Actively support cost-saving and cash conservation initiatives through efficient operations and resource utilisation. Minimum Requirements To qualify for this Train Driver position, you must meet the following criteria: NQF Level 4 (National Senior Certificate / Grade 12 or equivalent) – essential. Valid Train Driver Certificate – essential. Knowledge of the Surface Railways Rule Book – essential. Minimum 1–3 years’ relevant experience for external candidates. Medically fit to work in a mining environment (will be assessed). Clear security screening record. Valid driver’s licence (advantageous).
