Job Purpose

To assist the Train Driver in the safe and efficient driving/handling of all different types of trains/locomotives (airbrake, vacuum, high speed, heavy haul, and passengers) to ensure that customers’ freight/cargo reaches its destination in good condition and on time, thereby satisfying customer needs.

Position Outputs / Key Responsibilities

As a Trainee Train Assistant, you will be trained and expected to perform the following duties:

  • Sign on duty at the designated workplace and be allocated tasks for the duration of the shift.
  • Determine which locomotive to prepare, obtain and place required equipment, check and supplement prescribed equipment, and clean the working area.
  • Assist with starting up the locomotive as prescribed and perform locomotive brake tests.
  • Couple locomotives and despatch as required.
  • Prepare communication equipment (radios, handsets, walkie-talkies, telemeters where applicable) and verify functionality.
  • Perform pre-trip preparation of the locomotive and the entire train prior to departure to ensure roadworthiness and compliance with train working rules and safety standards.
  • Attach/detach vehicles according to work orders (in the absence of guard personnel), complete vehicle lists and vacuum forms, mount train indicators, examine the train, and conduct brake tests in conjunction with the Train Driver.
  • Execute shunting activities in sidings and en route according to directives to enhance safe working procedures.
  • Assist the Train Driver en route to ensure the safe movement of the train from the required point to the destination without delays or damage to locomotives, wagons, infrastructure, or equipment.
  • Verbally compare signal positions with the Train Driver, observe preceding trains, patrol locomotives, reset locomotive trip-outs, observe safe running of the train, protect the train during incidents, and assist during emergency circumstances.
  • Comply with all safety standards and laid-down instructions to remain motivated and competent.
  • Provide accurate and timely feedback to the Train Driver regarding any incidents or deviations along the route.
  • Perform various administrative duties as required.
  • Complete the Train Journal and submit it to the Section Manager at sign-off after every shift for accurate processing of records.
  • Undertake any other relevant duties as requested by management.

The role involves shift work, including nights, weekends, and public holidays, and requires a high level of discipline, safety awareness, and physical fitness.

Minimum Requirements

  • Grade 12 / Matric with Pure Mathematics and/or Physical Science.
  • Minimum height of 1.6m.
  • Be prepared to undergo periodic medical surveillance and safety behavioural risk assessments.
  • Physical, hearing, vision, and mental fitness (verified through medical tests).
  • Psychomotor ability (assessed through Vienna Testing System standards).
  • Ability to carry heavy objects.
  • Be willing and capable to successfully complete theoretical and practical Train Assistant training and obtain the necessary certification.
  • South African citizen.
  • Preference given to applicants residing in the Northern Cape Province — proof of residence must be submitted with the application.
