Housekeepers are essential members of the hostel support team. They ensure learners are safe, well-fed, clean, and supported in their daily routines while acting in loco parentis. This role combines caregiving, cleaning, mentoring, and administrative support in a structured educational environment. Job Purpose To provide comprehensive housekeeping, caregiving, and support services in school hostels. Key Performance Areas As a Housekeeper, your core duties will include: Ensure the safety and well-being of all learners at all times. Support and mentor learners, providing guidance and emotional care. Implement and enforce hostel rules and promote positive behaviour. Accompany learners for medical attention when required. Perform thorough cleaning of the hostel, including dormitories, bathrooms, common areas, and dining halls. Help prepare learners for school each day, including uniform checks and morning routines. Assist with serving of food in the dining hall and feeding learners who are unable to feed themselves. Administer medication as prescribed by medical practitioners. Help with bathing of younger learners or those unable to help themselves. Assist learners with schoolwork and homework support where needed. Help change nappies for learners who are unable to do so. Act in loco parentis, providing parental care and supervision. Be able to work shift patterns, including day and night shifts, weekends, and public holidays. The role requires physical stamina, patience, compassion, and the ability to work irregular hours in a residential school setting. Prerequisites Grade 10 or equivalent qualification. Differentiated Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement (DCAPS) Grade 5 or Technical Occupational Curriculum (TOC) Level 4 is accepted for persons with intellectual disability. Valid driver’s licence will be an added advantage (except for people with disabilities). Good communication skills. Ability to work with learners of different ages and needs.
