Position Overview

The Miner General will be responsible for carrying out underground mining activities safely and efficiently, ensuring compliance with company standards and safety regulations. The role requires a strong technical understanding of mining operations, good leadership ability, and adherence to SHERQ (Safety, Health, Environment, Risk, and Quality) principles.

The position is graded at C2 and reports to the relevant shift or production supervisor. It is permanent, with 15 vacancies available.

Minimum Requirements

To qualify for this position, candidates must meet the following educational and experiential requirements:

  • Grade 10 certificate or equivalent qualification.

  • Blasting Certificate for Scheduled Mines (essential).

  • 2 to 3 years’ relevant mining experience in underground operations.

  • Must be medically fit to work in the specific mining environment.

No additional certifications are required, but relevant underground experience and safety awareness are considered strong advantages.

⚙️ Key Responsibilities

1. SHERQ (Safety, Health, Environment, Risk, and Quality)

  • Enforce strict compliance with personal protective equipment (PPE) standards.

  • Participate in all SHERQ-related meetings, safety campaigns, and training.

  • Conduct accident and incident investigations and implement corrective actions to prevent reoccurrence.

  • Report all safety incidents, hazards, and near misses immediately to supervisors.

  • Conduct Safe Behavioural Observations (SBOs) and Planned Task Observations (PTOs).

  • Maintain a safe working environment in line with company policies and the Mine Health and Safety Act.

  • Participate in risk assessments and mitigation planning as required.


2. Production and Operations

  • Perform daily re-entry examinations to ensure working areas are safe.

  • Mark and install support systems in accordance with mine standards.

  • Identify reef bands and mark the working face as per geological reports.

  • Charge, blast, and clear mining areas safely and efficiently.

  • Plan, coordinate, and execute mining activities to achieve production targets.

  • Ensure proper use of mining equipment, explosives, and materials.

  • Monitor production metrics and take corrective action to maintain efficiency.


3. Administration and Reporting

  • Complete all documentation and reports accurately and on time.

  • Plan and coordinate leave cycles for team members.

  • Assist in preparing shift, blasting, and safety reports.

  • Report all irregularities or operational challenges promptly to management.

  • Ensure timeous submission of operational forms and data sheets to the branch manager.

  • Maintain a culture of compliance and accountability in all administrative functions.


4. People Management

  • Provide on-the-job coaching and guidance to subordinates.

  • Allocate work fairly and efficiently across team members.

  • Support performance management initiatives and ensure adherence to company procedures.

  • Motivate and inspire your crew to maintain productivity, safety, and high morale.
