Key Responsibilities (Position Outputs)

As a Trainee Train Assistant, you will learn and perform the following duties under supervision:

• Sign on duty and receive allocated tasks for the shift.
• Prepare locomotives by checking equipment, cleaning the working area, and assisting with startup and brake tests.
• Prepare and check communication equipment (radios, handsets, etc.).
• Perform pre-trip inspections of locomotives and trains to ensure roadworthiness and compliance with safety standards.
• Couple and uncouple locomotives and vehicles according to work orders.
• Execute shunting activities in sidings and en route as directed.
• Assist the Train Driver during the journey to ensure safe movement of the train.
• Observe signals, track conditions, and train performance while providing real-time feedback.

• Complete accurate trip reports, vehicle lists, and administrative documentation.
• Comply with all safety standards, operating procedures, and company policies.

Minimum Requirements

Educational Requirement:

• Grade 12 with Pure Mathematics and/or Physical Science.
