Key Responsibilities

Successful candidates will be responsible for the following core duties (among others):

• Receive corpses within the institution — accurately record and register all incoming bodies.
• Ensure name tags correspond with records and registers at all times.
• Transport corpses safely to and from wards, hospitals, and other facilities.
• Manage storage of corpses — check fridge temperatures daily, place bodies in correct shelves, and verify box numbers.
• Complete TPH Registers and assist with audits of corpse length of stay in the mortuary.
• Identify and prepare corpses for viewing, post-mortem, identification, or pauper’s burial.
• Sign off corpses from the TPH and removal forms when releasing bodies.
• Assist government officials and undertakers during the removal of corpses.
• Release corpses to families or funeral directors with dignity and proper documentation.
• Report any mortuary equipment requiring maintenance promptly.
• Maintain cleanliness of the mortuary, fridges, and shelves to the highest hygiene standards.
• Ensure effective utilisation of chemicals in line with infection control measures.
• Provide timely support to supervisors and report challenges immediately.
• Uphold confidentiality, respect, and professionalism in all interactions.
• Adhere to medico-legal policies, patient rights, and departmental procedures.

Minimum Requirements

• ABET (Grade 1-9) or equivalent basic education.
• No previous working experience required — suitable for dedicated entry-level candidates.
• Knowledge of Batho Pele Principles, Public Service Act, Code of Conduct, Customer Care, and Medico-Legal Policies.
• Understanding of Patient Rights and infection control practices.
