Detailed Duties and Responsibilities

As a Sterilisation Operator, you will be responsible for the full cycle of sterile services. Key duties include:

  • Effectively applying sterilisation processes and techniques according to established protocols.
  • Decontaminating, cleaning, inspecting, packing, and sterilising instruments, equipment, and linen supplies.
  • Promoting and adhering to strict infection control practices and health and safety regulations.
  • Assisting with the maintenance, cleaning, and testing of sterilisation equipment, including gas and autoclave machines, to ensure optimal working condition.
  • Using all resources and consumables in a cost-effective manner.
  • Monitoring, controlling, and maintaining adequate stock levels of sterile supplies.
  • Preparing and packing instruments and linen according to CSSD standards.
  • Reporting and assisting with investigations of broken equipment or lost items.
  • Lifting and pushing heavy equipment and trolleys safely.
  • Performing relief duties in other areas of the hospital as per operational needs.
  • Working shifts, including weekends, public holidays, night duty, and overtime when required.
  • Maintaining accurate records of sterilisation cycles and equipment testing.
  • Collaborating with theatre and ward staff to ensure timely supply of sterile items.
  • Keeping the CSSD area clean, organised, and compliant with hygiene standards at all times.

Minimum Requirements

Qualifications:

  • General Education and Training Certificate (GETC) / Grade 9 (Std 7) or equivalent.

Experience:

  • Appropriate sterilising and disinfection (CSSD) experience in a hospital environment (advantageous).

Inherent Job Requirements:

  • Willingness to work shifts, including weekends, public holidays, night duty, and overtime.
  • Willingness to perform relief duties according to operational needs.
  • Physical ability to lift, push, and move heavy equipment and trolleys.
