Detailed Duties and Responsibilities

As a Senior Field Ranger, you will lead teams and support broader reserve management. Key responsibilities include:

• Assisting with the overall protection of the nature reserve and its natural resources.
• Leading teams in law enforcement operations and nature conservation patrols.
• Coordinating the inspection and repair of boundary fences.
• Overseeing infrastructure maintenance across the reserve.
• Managing visitor behaviour, ensuring compliance with reserve rules, and promoting responsible tourism.
• Reporting all non-compliance, incidents, or threats promptly.
• Leading and supporting fire management services, including firebreaks and wildfire response.
• Assisting with access control at gates and entry points.
• Monitoring ecological processes, habitats, and biodiversity through data collection and field observations.
• Identifying and implementing ecological rehabilitation programmes (soil erosion control, alien plant removal, bush encroachment management).
• Supporting wildlife management activities in the reserve and surrounding communities.
• Conducting conservation management programmes, including water provision and habitat maintenance.
• Assisting with game monitoring, population counts, and management programmes.
• Performing general administrative tasks and maintaining accurate records.
• Supporting community outreach and environmental education initiatives.
• Ensuring high standards of safety, discipline, and professionalism within your team.
• Participating in reserve planning, audits, and continuous improvement processes.
• Acting as a mentor and coach to junior Field Rangers.
• Representing the reserve in stakeholder meetings when required.

Requirements for the Senior Field Ranger Position

Minimum Requirements:

• NQF Level 4 qualification (Grade 12 / ABET / AET Level 3 or equivalent) recognised by SAQA.
• Valid SAPS Firearm Competency Certificate.
• Valid driver’s licence (with exception for persons with disabilities).
• Physically fit and healthy.
• No criminal record.
• One (1) to two (2) years’ working experience in the Nature Conservation field.
• Related conservation training from an accredited institution (e.g., SAWC or equivalent).

Advantageous:

• National Diploma in Nature Conservation or a related field.
• Previous experience in a leadership or supervisory capacity in conservation.

Skills and Knowledge:

• Sound knowledge of nature reserve management and conservation legislation (national and provincial).
• Ability to safely handle and use a firearm.
• Computer literacy (basic MS Office applications).
• Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
• Excellent client orientation and customer focus (especially with visitors and communities).
