Key Responsibilities

As a Security Guard, you will be responsible for delivering professional security services in line with the Private Security Industry Regulations Act and Dis-Chem’s standards. Your main duties will include:

• Being vigilant and alert to surroundings, identifying suspicious activities, and apprehending violators according to legal authority and company procedures.
• Conducting regular random patrols of the premises to ensure optimal visibility and reduce risks.
• Monitoring and controlling access to the store by documenting and regulating entry of vehicles and pedestrians.
• Investigating and reporting signs of damage, unlawful entry, or incidents promptly to management.
• Providing a visible deterrent to discourage criminal activities, theft, damage, or personal injury.
• Being professionally courteous, approachable, and helpful to guests, customers, and employees.
• Performing access control duties, including searching of staff, suppliers, and merchandisers.
• Maintaining and completing all occurrence books, registers, and security documentation accurately.
• Cancelling staff purchases and declared goods according to procedure.
• Supervising and checking refuse removal to ensure compliance with Dis-Chem standards.
• Protecting company property and assets from dishonest acts or malicious behaviour.
• Remaining present at your post at all times while on duty.
• Practising good customer service relations with all internal and external customers.
• Reporting any unusual or suspicious behaviour by staff, customers, or suppliers.
• Participating in opening and closing procedures, ensuring doors and windows are secured.
• Ensuring all water taps are turned off when applicable.
• Conducting continuous personnel frisking and thorough vehicle searches.
• Reporting suspicious incidents verbally and in detailed written reports to management.
• Contacting policing and emergency authorities when required and providing accurate reports.
• Monitoring alarm systems, video cameras, and emergency equipment.
• Providing assistance to emergency teams during incidents.
• Maintaining order during evacuation procedures and at assembly points.
• Offering ongoing security advice and safety tips to staff and customers.
• Enforcing rules and regulations to prevent criminal activity.
• Performing special duties such as receiving calls, responding to messages, and running errands as required.
• Ensuring compliance with all health, safety, and security protocols at all times.

You will be expected to work shifts, including weekends and public holidays, as per store operational needs.

Minimum Requirements

Essential:

• Grade 12 / Matric or Senior Certificate.
• Valid PSIRA Grade C accreditation.
• Minimum 3 years general exposure in the retail industry (shopping malls, warehouses, etc.).

Advantageous:

• At least 1 year specific previous experience in a similar security role.
• Firearm competency and relevant training.
• Valid driver’s licence with own reliable transport and PDP (when deployed as a driver).

• Fire emergency and health & safety training and exposure.
• Excellent English communication skills (read, write, and speak fluently).
