Road Work Foremen play a critical frontline supervisory role in ensuring that roads remain safe, functional, and well-maintained for all road users. This is a hands-on leadership position where you will directly contribute to service delivery and road safety in your region. Key Responsibilities As a Road Work Foreman, you will support and supervise road construction and maintenance activities, including: Construction and maintenance of culverts, side drains, and road earth/layer works. Erection and maintenance of steel guardrails, gabions, and road fencing. Surfacing, pothole patching, and general road repairs. Cleaning and maintaining roads, sidewalks, verges, and resting areas. Installation and setting of road signs and barricading of work areas. Pipe laying and related civil works. Coordinating the blading programme and traffic accommodation during maintenance. Applying safety and precautionary measures on all work sites. Conducting regular inspections of work performed. Exercising control over tools, equipment, supplies, and team performance. Allocating tasks, supervising teams, and maintaining equipment. Ensuring compliance with safety regulations and departmental procedures. You will lead small teams of road workers while ensuring high productivity, quality workmanship, and adherence to departmental standards. Minimum Requirements NQF Level 3 (Grade 11) or a National Certificate in Construction (advantageous). Minimum of 3 years relevant road work maintenance experience. Valid driver’s licence (minimum Code B) – essential. Knowledge of road maintenance manuals, safety regulations, and costing systems. Understanding of weekly work returns, plant returns, and service delivery programmes. Knowledge of departmental reporting structures and transportation committees. Familiarity with Public Sector legislation, policies, disciplinary procedures, and the Employee Performance Management and Development System (EPMDS). Competencies and Skills Strong planning, organising, and problem-solving abilities. Supervisory and leadership skills. Good communication, numeracy, and computer literacy skills. Ability to learn quickly and apply new procedures. Responsible, punctual, conscientious, and receptive to feedback. Cultural awareness, empathy, and ability to work as part of a team.
