Job Purpose

As a Driver Operator, you will operate specialised earthmoving equipment (such as graders, loaders, excavators) and non-earthmoving vehicles to support road construction, maintenance, and rehabilitation projects. You will ensure safe, efficient, and high-quality delivery of road maintenance services while adhering to strict safety and operational standards.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Operate specialised equipment including graders for gravel road maintenance, re-gravelling, and shoulder maintenance.
  • Load and offload goods, materials, and equipment as required.
  • Perform daily inspection and basic maintenance of vehicles and machinery; report defects promptly.
  • Keep accurate log sheets and complete trip authorisations for all vehicles and equipment.
  • Apply safety and precautionary measures on all work sites.
  • Clean and lubricate machinery and equipment regularly.
  • Transport work teams, materials, and equipment to various sites.
  • Detect and repair minor mechanical problems on vehicles and take appropriate action.
  • Assist with road construction and maintenance activities such as pothole patching, drain cleaning, guardrail erection, and signage installation.
  • Comply with all departmental policies, safety regulations, and operating procedures.

Minimum Requirements

  • Grade 10 certificate (NQF Level 2) or equivalent.
  • Valid Driver’s Licence Code EC with Professional Driving Permit (PrDP).
  • Valid Operating Certificate / Departmental Competency Pink Card for specialised earthmoving equipment.
  • Minimum 5 years’ proven driving and operating experience with specialised equipment.
  • Ability to read and write.
  • Good eyesight and physical fitness.
  • Strong teamwork and communication skills.
  • Ability to interpret operating manuals, maintenance instructions, and service charts.
