Job Purpose The Professional Nurse: General Stream will provide comprehensive nursing care to patients in various clinical areas. You will be responsible for executing nursing duties with proficiency, maintaining a safe therapeutic environment, monitoring patient activities, and ensuring the highest standards of professional nursing care. This role requires a commitment to multidisciplinary teamwork, continuous quality improvement, and upholding the values of the Department of Health. Key Responsibilities As a Professional Nurse, your duties will include, but are not limited to: Execute nursing duties and functions with proficiency within the prescripts of applicable legislation and departmental policies. Provide a safe and therapeutic environment for patients, staff, and visitors. Monitor patient activities and perform standard nursing procedures in accordance with policies and procedures. Adopt a multidisciplinary approach to promote holistic patient care. Maintain accurate and complete patient records and documentation. Ensure client satisfaction through quality service innovation and professional nursing care by upholding Batho Pele Principles and patients’ rights. Ensure efficient and effective utilisation of resources (human, financial, and material). Take overall responsibility for the unit in the absence of the Operational Manager. Evaluate staff performance by adhering to the set standards of the Employee Performance Management and Development System (EPMDS). Participate in quality improvement initiatives, audits, and risk management activities. Provide mentorship and guidance to junior nurses and students. Promote a culture of safety, infection prevention, and control. Collaborate with the multidisciplinary team to achieve optimal patient outcomes. Participate in continuing professional development and in-service training programmes. Adhere to ethical and legal standards of nursing practice at all times. The role may involve shift work, including nights, weekends, and public holidays, as required by the hospital’s 24/7 operations. Minimum Requirements Basic Requirements (All Grades): Grade 12 / Matric / Senior Certificate or equivalent qualification. Basic R425 qualification (i.e., diploma/degree in nursing) or equivalent that allows registration with the South African Nursing Council (SANC) as a Professional Nurse. Current registration with SANC as a General Nurse. Certificate of Service from previous and current employers (endorsed and stamped by HR) – essential for experience calculation. Experience Requirements: Grade 1: No experience required after registration as a Professional Nurse with SANC. Grade 2: A minimum of 10 years appropriate/recognisable experience in nursing after registration as a Professional Nurse with SANC in General Nursing. Grade 3: A minimum of 20 years appropriate/recognisable experience in nursing after registration as a Professional Nurse with SANC in General Nursing. Knowledge, Skills, Training and Competencies: Sound knowledge of nursing care processes and procedures, nursing statutes, and other relevant legal frameworks. Thorough understanding of the scope of practice in the area of performance. Knowledge of the Code of Conduct, Patients’ Rights Charter, and Batho Pele Principles. Excellent communication skills (written and verbal). Strong report-writing and computer literacy skills. Coordination, problem-solving, planning, and organising abilities.
