Purpose of the Job To achieve defined production targets in your section by effectively leading and managing your crew, planning daily mining activities, ensuring the highest safety standards, and continuously driving performance improvement. Key Accountabilities & Responsibilities As a Miner at Sasol, you will take full responsibility for your section. Your duties will include: Safety, Health & Environment Manage safety, health, and environmental standards in your section. Conduct thorough start-of-shift and end-of-shift inspections. Perform statutory inspections (gas, ventilation, etc.) and complete all required reports. Conduct risk assessments and task observations regularly. Lead at least one rescue drill per month with your team. Ensure all team members use correct PPE and follow Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). Oversee housekeeping and maintain a clean, safe working environment. Take reasonable measures to protect the health and safety of all employees under your supervision. Production & Operations Lead and manage your crew to consistently meet or exceed production targets. Plan, organise, and control day-to-day mining activities. Manage complex mining activities and pillar extraction (where applicable). Oversee the safe transport of your team to and from the section. Ensure adequate materials and resources are always available in the section. Minimise wastage and production disruptions. Manage attendance and performance of crew members. Act as Relieving Shift Boss when required. Perform SAP inputs (time & attendance, orders, etc.) when acting as Shift Boss. People Management & Development Identify training and development needs of your crew and address them. Coach and mentor operators to improve skills and performance. Provide constructive feedback and address non-conformance timeously. Conduct performance meetings with team members. Ensure all operators are competent and licensed where required. Build a high-performance culture within your section. Support organisational change initiatives. Continuous Improvement Represent the Shift Boss in Operational Excellence (OE) meetings. Transfer knowledge from OE reports to Miners and Artisans. Drive continual improvement in your section. Collaborate with technical, engineering, and planning teams. Apply new ideas and methods to improve results. Ensure smooth handover between shifts. Compliance & Administration Ensure full compliance with all legal, audit, and Sasol requirements. Rectify findings from audits and inspections promptly. Submit accurate and timeous section reports. Maintain proper operator records and licensing documentation. Minimum Requirements Formal Education: National Senior Certificate (Matric) with Mathematics. Valid Blasting Certificate for Fiery Mines (Occupational Trade Certificate). Experience: Minimum 4 years relevant underground mining experience. Licences: Valid South African Driver’s Licence (Code EB or equivalent). Other Requirements: Physically and medically fit for underground mining work. Willing to work shifts, including weekends and overtime. Strong safety leadership and team management skills. Ability to work in a high-pressure underground environment. South African citizen.
