Job Purpose

The Mine Overseer Backfill will provide strategic and operational leadership for all backfill-related activities underground and at the surface paste plant. You will ensure that backfill operations are executed safely, efficiently, and in alignment with production targets, while maintaining the highest standards of safety, quality, and environmental compliance. This role is central to the success of long-hole open stoping and other mechanised mining methods at Platreef.

Key Responsibilities

As Mine Overseer Backfill, you will be accountable for:

• Overseeing and managing daily underground backfill operations to ensure full compliance with Mine Health and Safety Act requirements and company policies.
• Managing the surface paste plant and underground backfill reticulation system to deliver consistent, high-quality backfill material to stopes.
• Coordinating backfill schedules, including mixing, pumping, reticulation, and barricading activities.
• Working closely with Production, Geology, Ventilation, Rock Engineering, and Engineering teams to optimise backfill delivery and stope readiness.
• Supervising a team of miners, operators, and contractors, providing clear guidance, performance management, and safety leadership.
• Monitoring fill quality, curing times, and stope conditions to ensure safe and stable mining sequences.
• Preparing detailed daily, weekly, and monthly reports on backfill production volumes, safety performance, equipment utilisation, and operational challenges.
• Implementing and enforcing loss control, risk management, and continuous improvement initiatives.
• Ensuring all backfill activities align with the mine’s overall production plan and long-term strategy.
• Participating in safety meetings, risk assessments, and incident investigations.
• Promoting a culture of zero harm, accountability, and operational excellence among team members.

The role involves significant underground exposure and requires strong leadership in a high-production, mechanised mining environment.

Minimum Requirements and Qualifications

To be considered for this senior role, you must meet the following criteria:

Qualifications:

• Grade 12 (Matric) – essential.
• Blasting Certificate – essential.
• Mine Overseers Certificate of Competency – essential.
• Mine Manager’s Certificate of Competency – highly advantageous.
• Computer literacy (MS Office, Isometrix, and other mining software) – essential.
• Valid Driver’s Licence – essential.

Experience:

• Minimum 5 years proven experience as a Mine Overseer in underground mining operations.
• Strong background in backfill operations and long-hole open stoping environments.
• Extensive trackless mining and massive mining experience.
• Demonstrated success in managing large teams and achieving production targets in a mechanised mine.

Advantageous Qualifications:

• Certificates in crowd control management, tactical firearm handling, advanced driving, or defence and restraint techniques.
