Job Purpose

You will perform routine tasks such as refuse removal, garden maintenance, loading/unloading goods, washing equipment, and operating basic machinery to ensure a safe and professional environment for training and operations.

Detailed Key Responsibilities

As a Groundsman, your core duties will include:

  • Maintaining a high level of hygiene in and around the SAPS premises, including inner and outer parameters.
  • Performing routine tasks such as removing refuse bags and ensuring proper waste disposal.
  • Conducting garden maintenance, including grass cutting, weeding, and basic landscaping.
  • Loading and unloading of goods as required.
  • Washing and cleaning of equipment, including state vehicles.
  • Driving and operating machinery and vehicles such as tractors and lawn mowers related to gardening and grounds care.
  • Sweeping, scrubbing, and cleaning external areas, pathways, and open spaces.
  • Dusting, polishing, and general upkeep of outdoor furniture and structures.
  • Assisting with basic maintenance tasks and reporting any defects or hazards to the supervisor.
  • Adhering to occupational health and safety protocols at all times.
  • Working collaboratively with other support staff to achieve overall facility cleanliness and grounds standards.
  • Performing any other reasonable duties as assigned by supervisors.

The role involves physical work outdoors and indoors and may require extended hours or shift work depending on operational needs.

Minimum Requirements

  • Be a South African citizen (documentary proof required on the day of the interview).
  • ABET Level 4 / Grade 9 / Standard 7 certificate (NQF Level 1 as recognised by SAQA).
  • Understanding of how to handle cleaning detergents and basic occupational health and safety protocols.
  • Basic literacy, numeracy, and communication skills.
  • Ability to read and write.
  • Ability to interact with other officials in a professional manner.
  • The ability to operate elementary machines and equipment.
  • Willingness to work extended hours when necessary.
