Job Purpose

The Baker is responsible for preparing, baking, and finishing a variety of bakery products in accordance with Pick n Pay’s recipe specifications and quality standards. You will ensure that all baked goods are fresh, visually appealing, and consistently high in quality, contributing directly to the store’s reputation for excellent in-store bakery offerings. This role requires attention to detail, the ability to work under pressure, and a genuine passion for baking.

As a Baker, you will work closely with the bakery team to maintain high standards of hygiene, housekeeping, and safety while delivering products that meet customer expectations and drive sales.

Key Responsibilities

Your daily duties as a Baker at Pick n Pay Sea Point will include:

• Product Preparation and Baking: Prepare, bake, and finish a variety of bakery products (bread, rolls, pastries, cakes, etc.) according to established recipes, specifications, and quality standards. Ensure consistency in taste, texture, and appearance for every batch.
• Merchandising and Display: Merchandise and display baked products according to Pick n Pay’s laid-down standards to maximise visual appeal and drive impulse purchases. Keep displays neat, well-stocked, and attractive throughout the day.
• Hygiene, Housekeeping, and Safety: Maintain the highest standards of hygiene, housekeeping, and safe working practices in the bakery, including the floor and back-up areas. Adhere to all food safety, health, and safety regulations to protect customers and colleagues.
• Equipment Operation and Maintenance: Operate and clean bakery equipment according to laid-down standards. Report any defective machinery or utensils to the Bakery Manager promptly to minimise downtime and ensure operational efficiency.
• Administration and Record-Keeping: Complete relevant administration and documentation, such as production sheets, customer orders, waste logs, and stock records, accurately and on time.
• Customer Focus: Maintain a customer-minded approach at all times. Be proactive in ensuring that the bakery area contributes to an overall positive shopping experience.
• Team Collaboration: Work effectively as part of the bakery team, supporting colleagues during peak periods and contributing to a positive, collaborative work environment.
• Continuous Improvement: Identify opportunities to improve processes, reduce waste, and enhance product quality. Participate in training and development activities to continuously improve your baking skills.

The role involves working in a hot kitchen environment and requires physical stamina, as you will be standing for long periods, lifting moderate weights, and performing repetitive tasks. Shift work, including weekends and public holidays, will be required to meet store trading hours.

Minimum Requirements

• Previous experience as a Baker’s Assistant is essential (only Bakers Assistants may apply).
• Strong attention to detail and a conscientious “by the book” approach to baking and food safety.
• Customer-minded attitude with a genuine desire to deliver excellent products and service.
• Ability to handle routine work while maintaining high standards of accuracy and consistency.
• Thorough and accurate work ethic.
• Physically fit and able to work in a hot bakery environment.
• Willingness to work shifts, including early mornings, evenings, weekends, and public holidays.
• South African citizen with a valid ID.
