About the AFGRI Apprenticeship Programme

AFGRI Equipment has proudly held the John Deere Agency since 1962 and operates a wide network of branches across South Africa. The company specialises in the sales, service, and maintenance of agricultural equipment, construction machinery, forestry equipment, and golf & turf machinery.

This apprenticeship consists of 3 years of in-service training toward a qualification as a Tractor Mechanic or Earthmoving Mechanic. The programme includes formal training at a Practical Training Institute, distance learning, product-specific training from suppliers, and internal training by AFGRI specialists.

The first 6 months serve as a probation period, after which successful apprentices will enter into a formal AFGRI contract. Training is provided free of charge if passed, and apprentices will be contracted to either AgriSETA or MerSETA.

Key Duties of the Apprentice

Successful apprentices will be responsible for the following core duties (among others):

• Training to become a qualified Tractor Mechanic or Earthmoving Mechanic.
• Repair and maintenance of related agricultural and earthmoving equipment.
• Performing stock control and parts management tasks.
• Providing customer service and technical support.
• Undertaking general workplace duties and workshop housekeeping.
• Attending theoretical and practical training sessions as scheduled.
• Completing assignments and assessments to meet qualification requirements.
• Adhering to all safety, health, and company policies at all times.
• Demonstrating a strong work ethic and willingness to learn.
• Working collaboratively with the workshop team to achieve operational goals.

Minimum Requirements

• Valid driver’s licence.

• Administrative skills and computer literacy.
• Grade 12 with the following subjects passed:

  • Mathematics / Technical Mathematics (NOT Mathematical Literacy)

  • Diesel Trade Theory (advantageous)
  • Motor Trade Theory (advantageous)
