About the Security Guard Role at SAPS KwaZulu-Natal

The South African Police Service is the national law enforcement agency responsible for maintaining law and order and protecting the public. Security Guards are essential to ensuring the physical security of SAPS stations, garages, and offices through professional guarding and access control.

As a Security Guard, you will execute access control procedures, conduct patrols, monitor security equipment, and respond to incidents in line with the Control of Access to Public Premises and Vehicles Act and other relevant legislation. You will be based at key locations including Isipingo VSS, Jozini Garage, Wentworth Garage, Portshepstone VSS, Kokstad VSS, and the Provincial Head Office Auxiliary Services.

Key Responsibilities

Successful candidates will be responsible for the following core duties (among others):

  • Execute Access Control in terms of the Control of Access to Public Premises and Vehicles Act (Act No. 53 of 1985).
  • Perform positive identification of employees, visitors, and contractors at security access points.
  • Register employees, visitors, and contractors and conduct electronic searches where required.
  • Authorise entry into premises after complying with all legislative requirements and confirming visits with hosts.
  • Ensure proper escort procedures are followed.
  • Maintain the necessary visitor’s register and issue admission control cards.
  • Check suppliers, articles, and objects before allowing entry to prevent threats to premises safety.
  • Conduct regular patrols of buildings and fenced-off areas.
  • Guard vehicles and equipment within the premises from a security perspective.
  • Check all security equipment and facilities and take appropriate action when necessary.
  • Report any deficiencies or problems regarding security matters to senior security personnel.
  • Perform administrative duties related to security operations.
  • Maintain high levels of professionalism, confidentiality, and integrity at all times.
  • Work shifts and extended hours as required by operational demands.
  • Uphold all SAPS policies, procedures, and safety standards.

Minimum Requirements

  • Applicants must display competency in the core functions of the post.
  • Be proficient in at least English and one other official language.
  • Be a South African citizen (documentary proof required).
  • Grade 10 / Standard 8 / NCV Level 2 certificate (NQF Level 2).
  • Valid registration with the Private Security Industry Regulatory Authority (PSIRA).
  • At least a Grade C security certificate or higher.
  • Not declared unfit to possess a firearm.
  • Willing to undergo firearm competency training and maintain competency.
  • Relevant courses in the security field will serve as an added advantage.
  • Valid driver’s licence for a light motor vehicle (added advantage).
  • Willingness to work shifts and extended hours.
  • Knowledge of access control procedures, emergency protocols, and relevant security legislation.
