 Position: Driver Trainer


Purpose of the Job

The Driver Trainer is responsible for training, coaching, and evaluating company drivers to ensure they meet safety, compliance, and operational standards. The role focuses on both practical and theoretical training, improving driver performance, and maintaining legal and internal compliance standards. This includes assessing driving skills, facilitating accredited training, and keeping comprehensive records of all driver development activities.


⚙️ Key Responsibilities

Operational Duties

  • Assess new and existing drivers to identify strengths, weaknesses, and training needs.

  • Conduct training sessions on both soft skills and lifting equipment as per schedule.

  • Communicate and manage training schedules with line managers to ensure attendance and compliance.

  • Coach drivers through on-the-job and route-based evaluations to improve competency.

  • Perform on-route driver assessments to ensure safe and efficient driving behavior.

  • Verify and monitor licenses and PrDPs to ensure validity and compliance.

  • Maintain attendance registers and ensure they are correctly completed and filed.

  • Update and manage driver records within the Learner Management System (LMS).

  • Provide assessment feedback to managers and HR regarding driver performance.

  • Capture and update training and assessment data accurately on company systems.

Training and Compliance

  • Facilitate TETA-accredited training interventions according to company and legislative requirements.

  • Assess learners fairly and consistently, ensuring compliance with TETA standards.

  • Communicate using clear, understandable language and provide additional support to learners when needed.

  • Conduct site audits and route inspections to ensure vehicle and operational compliance.

  • Support operational teams with vehicle dispatching and logistics coordination as required.

Professional Standards

  • Maintain professional conduct and adhere to company dress codes and standard operating procedures.

  • Ensure housekeeping standards are maintained daily within training and operational areas.

  • Uphold Health and Safety regulations during all training and assessment activities.


Minimum Requirements

  • Grade 12 (Matric)

  • Code EC Driver’s License with a valid Professional Driving Permit (PrDP)

  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience as a Code EC driver (Superlink and Articulated vehicles)

  • TETA-registered Assessor accreditation

  • Clear criminal and driving record

  • Proven experience as a driving instructor

  • Willingness to work evenings and weekends as needed

  • Excellent communication, patience, and coaching skills


Required Unit Standards

  • Operating vehicle combination (Superlink and Articulated vehicles)

  • Operating rigid heavy vehicle

  • Operating rigid light vehicle

  • Dangerous goods transportation

  • Warehouse lifting equipment operation

  • Firefighting (basic safety and emergency response)
