Position Purpose The primary purpose of the Port Worker is to provide general labour support as directed by the supervisor. This includes performing cleaning, cargo handling, and basic operational tasks to maintain a safe, clean, and productive working environment while contributing to optimised cargo movement at the terminal. Key Responsibilities and Position Outputs Cleaning of operational equipment, including ship-to-shore cranes’ windows, cabins, and other machinery. Inspection of container conditions to identify damage or issues. Reefer (refrigerated container) monitoring and basic operations. Opening and closing of rail wagon twist-locks for cargo handling. Loading, off-loading, and slacking of cargo in strict compliance with standard operating procedures (SOPs). Hooking and unhooking of cargo and equipment. Tarping and untarping of cargo where required. Placing and removing dunnage to secure loads safely. General cleaning of operational areas, rail trucks, plant, workshops, offices, sheds, and ablution facilities as instructed. Completing applicable documentation such as accident reports and daily logs. Identifying and using the correct cargo handling equipment and gear. Participating in team efforts to maintain high housekeeping standards across the terminal. The role involves physically demanding work in an outdoor port environment, often in varying weather conditions. You must be safety-conscious, punctual, and willing to work shifts as required by operational needs. Minimum Requirements Qualifications: Grade 12 / NQF Level 4 (Matric) or equivalent. Experience: Minimum of 1 year relevant experience in a similar environment (port, warehouse, logistics, or general labour). Other Requirements: Must be a South African citizen. Physically fit and able to perform manual labour, including lifting, bending, and standing for extended periods. Willingness to work shifts, including weekends and public holidays. Reliable transport or residence in close proximity to the Port Elizabeth terminal (preference given to Nelson Mandela Bay residents). Clear criminal record. Competencies and Skills Knowledge: Basic understanding of terminal layout and operations. Knowledge of safety procedures and risk awareness in a port environment.
