Job Responsibilities: What You’ll Do as a Laboratory Assistant As a Laboratory Assistant, you will work under the supervision of senior personnel and contribute to the detection and management of plant pathogens (bacteria, fungi, nematodes, viruses, and more). Your daily tasks will include a mix of practical laboratory work and administrative support: Prepare samples and resources for pathogen detection – including processing, labelling, collecting plant parts, water, soil, and tissue samples. Prepare sample material through weighing, cutting, grinding, and other techniques. Prepare media, stains, buffers, and reagents. Store, pack, and transport samples as required. Assist with decontamination, disposal of used samples, and safe waste removal. Perform routine diagnostic analysis on samples. Propagate and maintain seeds and plants. Conduct basic maintenance on laboratory equipment and facilities; report any faults. Maintain laboratory tidiness – clean and sterilize glassware, wash lab coats, and clean equipment. Monitor temperatures of facilities and equipment. Handle administrative tasks such as record-keeping, updating registers and databases, and inventory control.
