Robben Island Museum is recruiting ten General Tour Guides on a 6-month contract for the Visitor Operations Department. These positions play a vital role in sharing the rich history of Robben Island with visitors from around the world.

The successful candidates will conduct research and combine information into compelling stories that help tourists recognise and acknowledge Robben Island’s history, including marine life, marine history, the history of buildings, geographical information, and the natural environment.

Position: General Tour Guide (X10 Posts) Contract Duration: 6 Months Department: Visitor Operations Location: Robben Island Museum Closing Date: 18 August 2026 at 16:00

Key Performance Areas

  • Analyse the tour roster
  • Verify that vehicles are appropriate and drivers are available
  • Check guide equipment in the vehicle
  • Receive tourists at the harbour on their arrival
  • Assess the needs of tourists and co-ordinate necessary arrangements (e.g. wheelchairs and prams)
  • Acquaint tourists with the tour structure, amenities, and the rules and regulations of Robben Island
  • Conduct the tour of Robben Island, highlighting information on history, marine life, marine history, buildings, geographical information, and the natural environment
  • Correlate information about world history and the Robben Island context
  • Manage stops during tours
  • Conclude tours and hand over tourists to Prison Guides
  • Search for information relating to Robben Island history (internet, newspapers, policies, videos, etc.)
  • Participate in discussions, forums, meetings, and training sessions within or outside the organisation
  • Discuss and expand information with peers and management
  • Design, develop, and include relevant information in tours
  • Perform general administration duties

Experience and Technical Skills Required

  • Registered Tour Guide with a Western Cape badge
  • Diploma / Degree in Tourism, History, Social Science, or any other related qualification
  • Bachelor’s Degree will be an added advantage
  • Minimum of two (2) years relevant experience
  • Fluency in English and one other official language
  • Understanding of South African and world political history and current events
  • Knowledge of environmental heritage and tourism
  • Fluency in a foreign language would be an advantage
