Robben Island Museum is recruiting six Bus Drivers on a 6-month contract for the Visitor Operations Department. These positions support the transportation of visitors and residents on and around the historic island.

The successful candidates will transport visitors and residents to and from the prison and around the island, shuttle residents from the harbour to their places of residence in the village, drive the bus safely, be prepared to sleep over on the Island, and work shifts.

Key Performance Areas

• Transporting visitors following a pre-planned route to a definite time schedule
• Regulating heating equipment and ventilation of the bus for the comfort of passengers
• Driving the bus at a safe speed in compliance with the National Road Traffic Act and regulations
• Assuming responsibility for the safety of visitors during loading, unloading, and transporting them to and from various sites
• Conducting daily vehicle inspections
• Checking water, fuel, oil, and mechanical condition before starting daily tasks
• Keeping operational records and compiling simple reports
• Reporting defects or problems with the vehicle to the unit manager
• Adhering to maintenance schedule instructions
• Reporting delays or accidents
• Signing logbooks daily to keep operational records
• Assisting passengers, including elderly or disabled individuals, on and off the bus and ensuring they are seated properly
• Communicating likely delays to passengers
• Checking wheel ramps at all times to assist disabled customers as and when required

Experience and Technical Skills Required

• Grade 10 (Matric will be an added advantage)
• Minimum of three years verifiable driving experience on light and heavy vehicles
• Knowledge of safety rules and regulations
• Valid unendorsed driver’s licence (Code 14) with valid PDP
• Good driving record
• No drunken driving convictions

Inherent Job Requirements

• Ability and willingness to sleep over on Robben Island
• Ability to work shifts
• Physically fit and able to assist passengers (including elderly and disabled persons)
• Strong sense of responsibility for passenger safety
