Job Purpose

The Firefighter will respond to and manage all fire-related incidents, providing emergency rescue services, basic medical care, fire prevention, and training activities. You will operate and maintain firefighting equipment and apparatus to protect lives and property, working under the guidance of senior officers while upholding the highest standards of safety, professionalism, and service delivery.

Key Responsibilities

Your main duties will include, but are not limited to:

  • Responding promptly to fires, rescues, hazardous substance incidents, and related emergency and non-emergency calls.
  • Carrying out firefighting activities, emergency operations, and rescue procedures as directed by supervisors and officers-in-charge.
  • Extricating and releasing casualties using appropriate techniques and equipment.
  • Resuscitating and providing basic medical care to injured persons at emergency scenes.
  • Operating a range of firefighting equipment, appliances, and tools to control, manage, and extinguish fires.
  • Undertaking fire protection duties in situations that threaten lives or property.
  • Preparing for emergency incidents and participating in protection duties under mentorship.
  • Taking part in training drills, simulation exercises, and physical fitness training.
  • Training relevant employees on fire theory and practical firefighting techniques.
  • Advising on preventative and corrective fire safety actions.
  • Implementing procedures and using proper equipment to promote security and protection of people and property.
  • Performing basic maintenance on equipment to ensure operational readiness.
  • Checking, cleaning, testing, and maintaining vehicles and firefighting apparatus.
  • Completing computerised occurrence logs and maintaining accurate records of daily incidents.
  • Conducting health and safety inspections to maintain a safe work environment.
  • Completing all required pro forma documentation.
  • Participating in Departmental Health and Safety Committee meetings.
  • Driving and operating heavy and extra-heavy specialised firefighting vehicles and appliances.
  • Operating machinery to gain access to buildings, hoist/lower equipment, and extricate victims.
  • Ensuring that fire apparatus and emergency equipment are always ready for safe and effective use.
  • Assisting with fire and safety training, inspections, life safety education, and drills.
  • Ensuring compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and all company policies.
  • Undertaking supervisory and line functional personnel-related tasks when required.

The role involves shift work, emergency call-outs, and physically demanding tasks in challenging environments.

Minimum Requirements and Qualifications

To be considered for this critical role, you must meet the following criteria:

Qualifications:

  • Grade 12 / Matric – essential.
  • IFSAC Accredited Firefighter training.
  • NFPA 1001 Firefighter 2 certification.
  • Firefighter II Certification.
  • Valid Code C1 driver’s licence with PrDP – essential.
  • Advanced driving experience is advantageous.
  • Hazmat experience and knowledge – essential.
  • EMT certification and First Aid Levels 1 to 3.
  • Basic Ambulance Attendant qualification.

Experience:

  • Firefighting training and at least 2–3 years related experience in emergency services or fire and rescue operations.

Other Requirements:

  • Medically and physically fit for firefighting duties.
  • Clear criminal record.
  • Excellent health and physical stamina.
  • Good understanding and practice of fire prevention procedures.
  • Knowledge of firefighting systems, classes, and chemistry of fire.
  • Strong communication skills (verbal and written).
  • Ability to react efficiently in emergency situations.
  • Administration, interpersonal, and customer liaison skills.

Core Competencies

  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Sound understanding of Hazmat guidelines and firefighting procedures.
  • Sound understanding of the security industry and adherence to the code of conduct.
