Role Summary

To enhance operational efficiency and service delivery through quality patient care, fostering a client-centric focus by being a brand ambassador and living the Netcare way.

Key Work Output and Accountabilities

Consistency of Care – Administrative Duties

  • Complete all company and legal documentation required for duty and ensure copies are handed to the Operations Manager for filing
  • Share knowledge with relevant team members
  • Follow agreed action steps until desired competence is achieved
  • Ensure hospital records are completed according to requirements when delivering patients via the casualty/emergency unit
  • Complete Electronic Patient Report Forms (EPRFs) accurately for every patient treated
  • Complete paperwork for overtime and leave
  • Perform any other reasonable duties as requested by the Operations Manager

Quality Improvement

  • Maintain work standards and integrity of data reporting
  • Respond to emergencies and administer treatment according to HPCSA protocols and regulations
  • Provide assistance with medical rescue, emergency communications or specialised transport where applicable
  • Immediately call for backup if the patient’s condition exceeds your scope of practice
  • Log all calls with the Netcare 911 Call Centre and obtain a Case Number for every call
  • Assist with in-service training where appropriate
  • Ensure cleanliness of the station daily
  • Maintain proper stock control and replacement after calls
  • Attend CME training to maintain CPD compliance
  • Participate in community projects if required
  • Stay up to date with HPCSA treatment protocols
  • Adhere to all company policies and procedures

Vehicle and Equipment

  • Control equipment according to set guidelines
  • Perform detailed vehicle and equipment checks before each shift (CARS sheet) and report discrepancies
  • Ensure daily cleanliness of vehicles and equipment, with thorough cleaning once a week
  • Maintain equipment in working condition according to manufacturer specifications
  • Prevent loss of equipment and report losses immediately
  • Keep rechargeable equipment serviceable and maintain batteries
  • Update contents checklists
  • Maintain accurate drug records and complete drug checklists at the start and end of shifts

Health and Safety

  • Ensure 100% compliance with the Compensation for Occupational Injuries & Diseases Act
  • Report all injuries sustained on duty immediately
  • Keep public areas neat and tidy
  • Act in accordance with basic safety regulations
  • Practise safe and considerate driving at all times
  • Ensure incident scenes are safe to approach
  • Report unusual occurrences to the Operations Manager
  • Wear appropriate protective gear on scenes
  • Maintain adequate stock control

Patient Care

  • Respond to emergency calls within one minute and non-emergency calls within three minutes (or notify the Call Centre of valid reasons)
  • Display compassion and empathy toward patients, family members and friends
  • Keep family members informed about patient treatment
  • Wear protective gloves when treating or transporting patients
  • Respect patient confidentiality (including after death)
  • Be courteous and professional at all times
  • Accurately document patient valuables
  • Maintain scheduled drug registers according to Netcare policy
  • Consult with an ECP or Medical Officer before certain interventions as per HPCSA ECA protocol
  • Present interventions that require reported practice to an ECP or MO within 48 hours

Self-Management and Development

  • Identify personal development needs and discuss them with your manager
  • Formulate and follow action steps to close competence gaps
  • Share knowledge with team members
  • Be punctual and professional
  • Meet deadlines
  • Deliver excellent customer service at all times

Skills Profile – Education (Essential)

  • Grade 12
  • Current registration with the HPCSA: Professional Board of Emergency Care Personnel as an Emergency Care Assistant (ECA)
  • Currency with HPCSA CPG updates
  • Communication skills (written and verbal)
  • Must be over 21 years old
  • Valid Code 10 driver’s licence with PrDP for passengers

Work Experience (Essential)

  • 1 year post-graduate patient care experience in an operational environment would be beneficial
  • Relevant computer proficiency (Microsoft Office) advantageous
  • Strong interpersonal, analytical and technical skills

Working Conditions

  • Professional flexibility in working hours, including weekends, public holidays and night duty shifts
  • Interaction with internal and external customers
  • May be required to work in an underground area where applicable
