The Limpopo Department of Agriculture and Rural Development works to promote economic growth through sustainable agriculture, food security, and rural development. Animal Health Technicians play a vital frontline role in implementing disease control programmes, supporting farmers, and ensuring compliance with national legislation such as the Animal Diseases Act and Meat Safety Act. You will work closely with State Veterinarians, farmers, and communities to protect livestock health, advance production, and prevent the spread of diseases.

Key Responsibilities

Successful candidates will be responsible for the following core duties (among others):

  • Render Animal Health Regulatory Support Services in terms of the Animal Diseases Act (Act 35 of 1984).
  • Implement disease control measures and eradication schemes.
  • Provide technical support to the State Veterinarian on animal disease control, reproduction, and production advancement.
  • Collect samples for diagnostic purposes and participate in law enforcement activities.
  • Deliver extension services on animal health matters to animal owners and farmers.
  • Perform administrative functions, including populating databases and compiling monthly and quarterly reports.
  • Monitor and report on specific disease control programmes.
  • Assist with meat safety inspections and compliance under the Meat Safety Act.
  • Promote animal identification and traceability in line with relevant legislation.
  • Maintain accurate records and ensure timely submission of reports.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to improve animal health outcomes in the district.
  • Participate in outreach and awareness campaigns on disease prevention.
  • Ensure compliance with the Public Finance Management Act (PFMA) in daily operations.

Minimum Requirements

  • Grade 12 (Matric) plus a relevant NQF Level 6 qualification in Animal Health or an equivalent tertiary qualification recognised by SAQA.
  • Current registration with the South African Veterinary Council (SAVC) as an Animal Health Technician (compulsory).
  • No experience required — recent graduates and newly qualified technicians are encouraged to apply.
  • Valid driver’s licence (with exception for people with disabilities).
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, negotiation, and time management skills.
  • Thorough knowledge of the Animal Diseases Act, Animal Identification Act, Meat Safety Act, and related regulations.
  • Computer proficiency and strong report-writing skills.
  • Willingness to work in rural areas and travel within the assigned district.
