Key Responsibilities

• Law Enforcement: Enforce Road Traffic, Public Passenger, and Transport Legislation through planned activities, issuing notices, executing arrests, and attending court proceedings.

• Vehicle and License Examinations: Conduct learner/driver license tests, vehicle roadworthiness tests, and monitor compliance at Driver Licence Testing Centres (DLTC) and Vehicle Testing Stations (VTS).

• Visible Policing: Provide traffic control, participate in roadblocks and special operations, patrol roads, and promote crime prevention activities.

• Administrative Duties: Maintain records, comply with the Firearms and Ammunition Act 60/2000, and ensure adherence to operational plans and departmental guidelines.

• Safety and Compliance: Escort abnormal loads, manage overload control, and advise on hazardous locations using the Transport Handbook (TRH) 11.

Requirements and Competencies

• Education: Senior Certificate (NQF Level 4 or equivalent).

• Qualifications: Basic Traffic Officer’s Diploma.

• Experience: One year of practical experience in law enforcement.

• Licensing: Valid Driving Licence (minimum Code B).

• Criminal Record: No criminal record; applicants will undergo personnel suitability checks.

• Knowledge:

  • Road Traffic and Public Transport legislation, policies, and regulations.

  • Vehicle inspections, impoundment, and dangerous goods.

  • Firearms and Ammunition Act 60/2000, code of conduct, and departmental policies.

  • Guidelines from the Director of Public Prosecutions and overload control.

  • Operational guidelines on law enforcement equipment.

  • Literacy (written and verbal communication in at least two provincial languages).

  • Negotiation and conflict resolution.

  • Driving, interpretation, legal evidential, and observation skills (e.g., detecting moving violations/defects).
