The Department of Basic Education has officially opened Phase 5 applications for Teachers Assistants and School General Assistants. This exciting opportunity is aimed at empowering South African youth by providing them with valuable work experience in the education sector.

Who Can Apply for Phase 5?

To qualify, applicants must meet ALL of the following criteria:

Age: 18 – 35 years old
Residency: Must be a South African resident with a valid RSA ID, passport, or work permit
Proximity to School:

  • Must live within 5km of the school

  • Or within 30km for farm schools
    Employment Status: Not currently employed
    Education Status: Not enrolled in part-time or full-time studies or a learnership
    Income Status: Not receiving a salary, wage, stipend, or government grant
    Criminal Record: Must have no criminal record
    Fair Selection: Must not be related to or closely connected with any school staff
    Training: Must have completed all compulsory training and received certificates

‍ Responsibilities of a Teacher’s Assistant

Successful candidates will be expected to perform the following tasks:

  • Classroom Support: Assisting with teaching and learning in the classroom

  • Admin Duties: Helping teachers with lesson planning and school admin

  • Preparation: Creating classroom displays and preparing learning materials

  • Discipline & Behavior: Supporting positive behavior in the classroom

  • Activities: Assisting with school events, trips, and extracurricular programs

  • Academic Help: Providing exam and revision support for learners
