The City of Ekurhuleni is seeking dedicated and physically fit individuals to join our Environmental Resource & Waste Management Department as General Assistants. Minimum Requirements:

  • Educational Requirement: Minimum Grade 9 qualification.
  • Physical Ability: Must be physically capable of performing manual labor and handling the duties required by the position.

Core Responsibilities:

As a General Assistant, you will be responsible for a variety of tasks aimed at maintaining the cleanliness and orderliness of the City of Ekurhuleni. Your key duties will include:

  • Refuse Collection: Collect and remove refuse from residential, business, and industrial premises to maintain a clean environment.
  • Litter Bin Management: Place and remove litter bins in designated areas and change refuse bags as needed.
  • Public Area Cleaning: Physically clean litter from sidewalks, streets, and public parking areas to ensure cleanliness.
  • Vehicle Operation: Operate the lifting and compaction controls of waste collection vehicles safely and efficiently.
  • Container Handling: Hook and empty 240-liter and 851-liter refuse containers as part of the waste collection process.
  • Spillage Management: Clean any spillage of refuse during the collection process to maintain hygiene standards.
  • Equipment Maintenance: Report any defects on the compaction unit of vehicles to the driver and assist in the cleaning and greasing of vehicles.
  • Animal Carcass Removal: Safely remove animal carcasses from roads, houses, and veterinary facilities as required.
  • Health and Safety Compliance: Ensure all tasks are performed in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA).
