A challenging vacancy currently exists for a Field Ranger at Addo Elephant National Park (Darlington Dam Section). The successful incumbent will report to the Field Ranger Sergeant and play a key role in law enforcement, anti-poaching, natural resource management and conservation support within the park.

Minimum Requirements

  • Grade 12 (Matric) or equivalent NQF Level 4
  • NQF 2 National Certificate in Conservation Guardianship
  • On-the-job training following successful completion of Basic Field Ranger Training
  • EMI Grade 5 designation (compulsory) or must qualify within the stipulated period
  • 1–2 years relevant experience as Armed Environmental Monitor, Field Guard or in Conservation
  • Working knowledge of relevant Conservation Legislation
  • Valid Code 8 driver’s licence
  • Computer literacy
  • Basic technical skills
  • NQF Level 4 Handle and Use a Self-Loading Rifle Firearm Proficiency (valid SAPS Competency Certificate, Original Training Competency Certificate for Business Unit Standards, and Statement of Results for Law and Business Purpose Unit Standards required)
  • Must be at least 60% physically fit and prepared to undergo a fitness test before the interview
  • Must be willing to undergo a medical examination
  • SAPS criminal record to be attached if available (criminal checks will be conducted on the successful candidate)

Desirable:

  • National Diploma in Nature Conservation
  • Certificate in Resource Guardianship (NQF Level 5) or equivalent

Key Responsibilities

  • Participate in regular foot patrols in areas inaccessible by vehicle and in difficult, mountainous terrain
  • Conduct anti-poaching operations throughout Addo Elephant National Park (including flexi-time, night shift and overtime)
  • Participate in regular clandestine camping deployments and observation posts in support of anti-poaching operations
  • Assist in the control, capture, handling and transportation of animals
  • Follow correct procedures for documenting and reporting on law enforcement activities
  • Assist with natural resources management (invasive plant control, alien biota, soil erosion and fire management)
  • Gather information for the implementation of management plans using electronic devices
  • Maintain records and prepare reports of work activities
  • Capture field data electronically, including situational reports
  • Assist with the management of fauna (water provision, game capture and transportation)
  • Assist with the control of visitor behaviour and access
  • Assist with the control of EPWP contractors’ movement within the park
  • Conduct fence patrols and fence maintenance
  • Perform general maintenance of conservation infrastructure (generators, pumps, storerooms and terrain near visitor facilities)
  • Assist with maintenance and management of all assets

Accommodation & Remuneration

  • The successful candidate will be required to reside within the park
  • Official accommodation will be made available
  • Remuneration includes a basic salary on the Paterson B3 scale plus allowances and benefits as specified in the SANParks HR Tariff Document and Conditions of Service
