About the Department of Home Affairs Inspectorate

The Department of Home Affairs is responsible for managing immigration, citizenship, and civil registration services in South Africa. The Inspectorate unit focuses on law enforcement, detection of illegal foreigners, investigation of serious offences (including smuggling of migrants and document fraud), and the effective deportation of individuals who violate immigration laws. Key Responsibilities

Successful candidates will be responsible for the following (among others):

  • Provide effective leadership in law enforcement and monitoring of investigations involving illegal foreigners under the Immigration Act No. 13 of 2002.
  • Supervise, administer, and enforce the detection, tracing, arrest, and detention of illegal foreigners.
  • Lead investigations into smuggling of migrants, human trafficking, and the illegal production or theft of enabling documents (birth certificates, passports, visas, IDs, etc.).
  • Assist in high-profile cases involving corruption-facilitated illegal migration.
  • Appear and testify in criminal, civil, and disciplinary proceedings on behalf of the Department.
  • Oversee the lawful deportation of illegal foreigners, including monitoring voluntary departures.
  • Conduct in loco inspections and promote a climate that discourages illegal migration.
  • Monitor the status of foreigners in the country and verify legal documentation.
  • Liaise with law enforcement agencies and stakeholders for identity verification and case management.
  • Participate in security cluster forums, case flow management meetings, and joint operations.
  • Prepare detailed reports, statistics, and operational documentation.
  • Operate, maintain, and safeguard assigned heavy-duty vehicles and tools of trade.
  • Manage human, physical, and financial resources within the unit.
  • Coach and mentor team members on compliance with all regulatory frameworks.
  • Ensure implementation of departmental policies and procedures.

Minimum Requirements

  • A qualification in Law, Public Management, Public Administration, Policing, Criminology, Forensics, or Criminal Justice at NQF Level 6 (as recognised by SAQA).
  • Minimum 2 years’ relevant experience in a law enforcement environment.
  • Sound knowledge of the Immigration Act, Refugees Act, Criminal Procedure Act, and related regulations.
  • Understanding of international treaties and government structures.
  • Valid driver’s licence (Code C1 or Code 10) with a valid Public Driver’s Permit (PDP).
  • Willingness to travel (including outside South Africa) and work extended hours.
  • Excellent interpersonal, problem-solving, analytical, report-writing, and communication skills.
  • Computer literacy and strong planning/organisational abilities.
  • High level of integrity, patriotism, and professionalism.
