Job Overview

As a Code 10 Driver Salesman, you will play a critical role in the transportation and sales of bread and confectionery products. Based in Empangeni, you will report to the Distribution Manager and focus on delivering exceptional service to customers, including traders and retail chain stores, while driving sales through cash transactions and new customer acquisition. Key Responsibilities

• Driving and Deliveries:

  • Safely deliver bread and confectionery to customers, ensuring accurate and timely deliveries.

  • Check stock loaded against orders, report discrepancies, and sign loading sheets.

  • Recover and return all crates to the bakery on the same day.

  • Collect products from other bakeries/drivers in case of breakdowns.

  • Transport personnel, materials, or equipment as needed.

• Vehicle Maintenance:

  • Maintain a clean vehicle to meet hygiene standards and comply with the Occupational Health and Safety Act.

  • Conduct daily vehicle checks using the company checklist, report faults, and arrange repairs or replacements.

  • Immediately report accidents, theft, or damage to the Logistics Manager.

• Sales and Customer Service:

  • Engage with customers weekly to maintain high service levels and retain business.

  • Identify opportunities to increase sales to existing customers and acquire new clients.

  • Report potential sales areas or customer losses to the supervisor for follow-up.

  • Implement promotions and ensure customers receive accurate orders.

• Van Assistant Supervision:

  • Oversee and train van assistants, ensuring they are presentable and meet company standards.

  • Report performance issues to the Route Controller/Supervisor.

  • Foster a harmonious working relationship with the van assistant.

• Transactional Duties:

  • Secure cash and paperwork using the vehicle safe and remain vigilant against fraud or robbery.

  • Accurately complete invoices, delivery notes, crate control documents, and vehicle logs.

  • Conduct cash-ups in the presence of a supervisor and resolve shortages within 24 hours.

  • Ensure stock sold balances with cash received.

• Competitor Analysis:

  • Collect information on competitor sales, customers, and products to support strategic planning.

• General Duties:

  • Assist in other business areas (e.g., van assistant or loader duties) as required.

  • Report health issues that may affect safe driving to the supervisor.

Minimum Requirements

• Education: Grade 12 (Matric) certificate.

• Licenses: Valid Code 10 driver’s license and Professional Driving Permit (PDP).

• Experience: Minimum 2 years’ driving experience in the FMCG industry, with proven skills in delivering and selling products for cash to existing and new customers.

• Skills:

  • Ability to read, write, understand, and communicate in English.

  • Good numeracy skills for accurate stock and cash handling.

  • Strong customer service and interpersonal skills.

• Availability:

  • Willingness to work weekends, public holidays, and overtime as needed.

  • Availability for standby shifts to cover driver absenteeism.
