Job Advert Summary

The successful candidate will drive a bus to transport passengers on scheduled services over established routes. Responsibilities include controlling lighting, heating and ventilation for passenger comfort, observing prescribed speeds, traffic conditions and signals, and ensuring passengers arrive at their destinations safely and on time.

This is a restricted commercial contract that is not subsidised by government. Drivers must hold a Public Services Driving Licence (PG), master defensive and preventive driving techniques, strictly obey traffic laws, and comply with the company code of conduct, policies and procedures.

Minimum Requirements

  • Grade 12 / National Certificate
  • Job-specific training
  • Driver’s licence categories: CE – G, CE – PG, and C – G
  • At least 5 years of experience in the same or similar position

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Follow all WSWPs (Workplace Safe Work Procedures) involved in the activities
  • Read, understand and accept the code of conduct
  • Comply with Unitrans Passenger rules and regulations
  • Read and understand the drivers’ manual
  • Report near misses, incidents and property damage (even if not directly involved)
  • Understand and adhere to HST regulations and policies
  • Avoid involvement in incidents and accidents while driving
  • Practise safe driving habits at all times
  • Immediately report any incidents to Management
  • Inspect the bus for deviations from standards or malfunctions before trips
  • Record defects on the checklist and report to the supervisor
  • Decide whether to start the journey based on the nature of any deviation/malfunction
  • Participate in DSS sessions with the Supervisor and HST
  • Participate in required training
  • Register passengers on the trip
  • Ensure the vehicle is refuelled and kept clean
  • Record and report all events, incidents and accidents during trips
  • Adhere to traffic laws and the customer’s SMS policy
  • Complete log books properly and keep an accurate log of activities and hours
  • Maintain a positive attitude towards customers
  • Do not deviate from the authorised route
  • Make stops only at authorised places unless instructed otherwise
  • Respect signage and speed limits
  • Remove ignition keys after parking and take responsibility for key control
  • Start vehicles from inside the cabin
  • Block vehicle wheels with two chocks after parking
  • Ensure seat belts are used by the driver and all occupants
  • Drive only with a valid driving licence and RAC2 card
  • Ensure conservation and good use of the vehicle
  • Report any damage to the Manager/Supervisor on duty
  • Comply with collection times on the Job card
  • Avoid overtaking other Unitrans vehicles unless authorised
  • Do not make stops after unloading passengers at the end of the journey
