Job Overview

As an Ultra-heavy Motor Vehicle Driver, you will be based at our Clayville contract, operating Superlink/Interlink vehicles to transport goods safely and efficiently to various clients. This permanent role requires a strong focus on defensive driving, vehicle maintenance, and adherence to safety protocols. You will play a critical role in ensuring timely deliveries while upholding Unitrans’ high standards of operational excellence and customer service.

Key Responsibilities

  • Vehicle Operation:

    • Prepare ultra-heavy vehicles for trips, including pre-trip inspections and ensuring compliance with the National Road Traffic Act (e.g., no overloading).

    • Operate Superlink/Interlink vehicles to transport goods to designated locations.

  • Loading and Offloading:

    • Load and offload goods using proper techniques to ensure safety and prevent damage.

    • Secure loads correctly to maintain stability during transit.

  • Documentation and Ancillary Duties:

    • Handle required documentation, such as delivery notes and log sheets, accurately.

    • Report emergencies, defects, or incidents promptly per company procedures.

  • Safety and Compliance:

    • Adhere to defensive driving techniques and promote Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and safety protocols.

    • Maintain a clean vehicle, uniform, and personal protective equipment (PPE).

    • Operate a fire extinguisher when necessary.

  • Efficiency and Housekeeping:

    • Maximize vehicle cost-effectiveness and efficiency through careful operation.

    • Ensure proper housekeeping of vehicles and work areas.

  • Work Schedule:

    • Be prepared to work shifts, weekends, and public holidays as required.

  • Assessments and Compliance:

    • Successfully complete medical evaluations, USCS training modules, induction processes, and practical driving evaluations.

    • Maintain a clean criminal record, verified through personnel suitability checks.

Minimum Requirements

  • Education: Grade 12 (Matric) or National Certificate.

  • Licenses: Valid Code EC driver’s license with a Professional Driving Permit (PrDP).

  • Experience:

    • Minimum 3 years’ experience driving ultra-heavy vehicles.

    • Minimum 3 years’ experience operating Superlink/Interlink/combination vehicles.

  • Skills and Knowledge:

    • Proficiency in defensive driving techniques.

    • Knowledge of emergency and defect reporting procedures.

    • Familiarity with vehicle inspections and fire extinguisher operation.

    • Understanding of vehicle loading and offloading techniques.

    • Ability to maximize vehicle cost-effectiveness and efficiency.

  • Other Requirements:

    • Own reliable transport to and from work in Clayville.

    • Clean criminal record, verified through suitability checks.

    • Medically fit to operate heavy vehicles (medical evaluation required).
