Purpose of the Position

The purpose of the General Worker position is to carry out cleaning, refuse removal, and refuse bin delivery-related tasks. These duties support service delivery across streets, residential areas, informal settlements, tourist zones, and designated municipal areas. Tasks may include street cleaning, sweeping, stacking, lane flushing, carcass removal, and refuse bin distribution.

Key Responsibilities

Successful candidates will be responsible for, but not limited to, the following duties:

• Street cleaning, sweeping, and litter picking using brooms, shovels, and appropriate tools

• Cleaning refuse bins and designated areas

• Collecting and placing filled refuse bags on pavements or kerbsides for collection by street truck teams

• Clearing spillages caused by refuse bag breakage

• Stacking refuse bags correctly at designated stacking points

• Observing all safety precautions while performing duties

• Wearing protective clothing at all times

• Reporting safety incidents, equipment defects, and injuries to the Team Leader or Operations Supervisor

• Liaising with members of the public and other municipal departments to address service-related queries

• Distributing refuse bags to communities according to service requirements

• Loading, delivering, and offloading new or replacement refuse bins

• Checking bins for damage and recording serial numbers in the delivery register

• Ensuring customers sign delivery receipts for refuse bins

• Performing any other tasks delegated by supervisors to support operations

Minimum Requirements

Applicants must meet the following criteria:

• Grade 10 qualification

• At least 12 months’ experience in cleaning or general work

• No criminal record

• Physically and mentally fit to perform manual labour

• South African citizen

• Must reside within the City of Johannesburg (proof of residence required)

• Knowledge of relevant tools, equipment, and cleaning procedures

• Understanding of relevant legislation and company policies

• Ability to follow instructions accurately

• Ability to prioritise and complete assigned tasks

• Capability to work independently and as part of a team
