This position offers a unique opportunity to work closely with various reptile species while educating the public about these fascinating creatures.
About the Role
As a Snake Handler, you will be responsible for the care and management of our snake collection. This role involves maintaining clean enclosures, feeding the snakes, and assisting with their veterinary care. You will also have the opportunity to engage with the public through live snake interactions, sharing your knowledge and enthusiasm for reptiles.
Key Responsibilities
- Maintain and Clean Enclosures: Ensure that all snake habitats are clean, safe, and comfortable for the reptiles.
- Feeding: Properly feed snakes and other reptiles according to their dietary needs and schedules.
- Veterinary Assistance: Assist with routine veterinary care and monitor the health of the reptiles.
- Public Engagement: Conduct live snake interactions, educating visitors about snakes, their habitats, and conservation efforts.
- Flexible Working Hours: Be prepared for weekend work as required to accommodate public programs and events.
Requirements
Educational Qualification:
- National Senior Certificate or NQF Level 4 (no prior work experience is required).
Desirable Experience:
- Previous exposure to working with reptiles is advantageous but not mandatory.
Skills and Knowledge:
- Reptile Knowledge: General understanding of reptiles and their care.
- Safety Regulations: Familiarity with Occupational Health and Safety regulations.
- Handling Skills: Competency in safely handling reptiles.
- Communication Skills: Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to present information engagingly.
- Public Speaking: Confident public speaking abilities to effectively educate diverse audiences.
