Job Overview

As a Foreman in Sasol’s Mining division, you will oversee engineering maintenance processes to ensure mining teams meet production targets within the principles of Quality, Cost, Delivery, Safety, and Morale (QCDSM). Based in Secunda, this permanent role involves managing equipment downtime, maintenance budgets, and safety compliance while fostering team development. You will implement operational projects, ensure adherence to engineering standards, and drive continuous improvement to achieve best-in-class safety and production outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Maintenance Management:

    • Manage daily engineering and maintenance strategies, including overhaul plans, to meet departmental KPIs.

    • Deliver maintenance decisions on equipment repair or replacement, minimizing downtime (MTTF/MTTR).

    • Conduct condition monitoring, failure trend analysis, and root cause elimination to optimize equipment performance.

    • Execute predictive maintenance recommendations and manage maintenance backlogs.

  • Budget and Cost Control:

    • Manage maintenance costs against production targets (Rand/tonne) within the allocated budget.

    • Ensure cost-effective operations to achieve production volumes.

  • Safety and Compliance:

    • Drive best-in-class safety performance, targeting zero harm, zero fatalities, and a low Lost Work Day Case Rate (LWDCR).

    • Ensure compliance with Safety, Health, and Environment (SHE) standards, addressing major findings and outstanding actions.

    • Adhere to engineering governance bodies, SOPs, COPs, and relevant legislation.

  • Operational Projects:

    • Implement operational projects and ensure engineering compliance in the appointed area.

    • Develop and enforce engineering Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).

    • Assess the economic and engineering viability of business cases, providing inspection expertise.

  • Team Leadership:

    • Recruit, train, coach, and develop team members, managing vacancy rates and succession planning.

    • Maintain low turnover rates, high employee engagement, and enablement scores.

    • Conduct planned task observations and ensure training days align with departmental goals.

  • Planning and Coordination:

    • Coordinate maintenance and production planning to support departmental targets.

    • Drive delivery against Operational Excellence (OE) initiatives.

Minimum Requirements

  • Education:

    • High School Diploma or equivalent (Grade 12/Matric, NQF Level 4).

    • Occupational Trade Qualification/Certificate (e.g., N3 or higher in a relevant engineering trade such as Mechanical, Electrical, or Mining).

  • Experience:

    • Minimum 6 years of relevant experience in engineering maintenance, preferably in mining or heavy industry.

    • Proven experience in managing maintenance processes, equipment downtime, and team supervision.

  • Skills and Competencies:

    • Action Planning: Ability to plan and execute maintenance strategies effectively.

    • Engineering Technology/Design: Knowledge of engineering principles and maintenance processes.

    • Commercial Agility: Understanding of cost management and budget control.
