The Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture invites suitably qualified applicants to apply for the position of Cleaner at the historic Bayworld Museum in Gqeberha. This role is essential in ensuring that the museum environment remains clean, hygienic, safe, and welcoming for staff, visitors, and stakeholders. The position offers a stable income, growth potential within government structures, and an opportunity to serve one of the Eastern Cape’s leading cultural and educational institutions.


Minimum Requirements

  • Grade 8 certificate, or

  • ABET Level 4, or

  • NQF Level 1–3
    (No experience required.)

  • One year of experience as a cleaner will be an added advantage.

  • Good interpersonal skills.

  • Good verbal communication skills.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

  • Motivated, reliable, and committed to consistent performance.

This position is ideal for someone who is hard-working, willing to learn, and capable of providing high-quality cleaning services in a professional setting.


Key Duties and Responsibilities

The appointed candidate will be responsible for providing effective cleaning services in various areas of the Bayworld Museum. Duties include but are not limited to:

1. Cleaning of Offices, Corridors, Elevators, and Boardrooms

  • Dusting, polishing, and maintaining office furniture.

  • Sweeping, scrubbing, and waxing floors.

  • Vacuuming and shampooing carpets and rugs (where required).

  • Cleaning windows, walls, and doors.

  • Emptying waste bins and maintaining a clean environment at all times.

  • Ensuring office areas remain fresh, hygienic, and presentable to staff and visitors.

2. Cleaning Kitchens and Eating Areas

  • Cleaning and sanitising kitchen surfaces, sinks, and bins.

  • Washing, drying, and maintaining kitchen utensils.

  • Ensuring all kitchen areas remain neat and hygienic.

3. Cleaning Restrooms and Ablutions

  • Refilling items such as soap dispensers, handwash, toilet paper, and paper towels.

  • Cleaning and disinfecting toilets, basins, and floors.

  • Emptying, washing, and sanitising waste bins.

  • Maintaining a fresh and hygienic environment throughout restroom facilities.

4. Care of Cleaning Materials and Equipment

  • Safely using and storing cleaning materials, equipment, and chemicals.

  • Reporting faulty or broken equipment immediately.

  • Cleaning machines such as vacuum cleaners, microwaves, and other appliances after use.

  • Maintaining an accurate stock of cleaning supplies and notifying supervisors when replenishment is required.

Overall, the Cleaner will play a critical role in maintaining high hygiene standards and ensuring a safe, clean, and pleasant environment across the museum premises.
