Job Overview

As a Bus Driver – Passenger at Unitrans’ Mega Bus contract in Secunda, you will operate buses on scheduled routes, ensuring the safe and timely transport of passengers, primarily in the mining sector. This permanent role requires mastery of defensive driving, strict adherence to traffic laws, and compliance with Unitrans’ safety protocols. Key Responsibilities

Passenger Transport:
- Drive buses on established routes, ensuring timely arrivals and departures.
- Control lighting, heating, and ventilation to maintain passenger comfort.
- Assist passengers with boarding and disembarking, ensuring a safe and pleasant journey.
Safety and Compliance:
- Adhere to traffic laws, Unitrans Passenger rules, and Health, Safety, and Transport (HST) regulations.
- Practice defensive and preventive driving techniques to ensure passenger and road user safety.
- Avoid overtaking other Unitrans vehicles unless authorized due to mechanical issues.
- Use seat belts for yourself and ensure all passengers do the same.
- Remove ignition keys and apply wheel chocks when parking.
Vehicle Maintenance:
- Conduct pre- and post-trip inspections, recording deviations or malfunctions in the checklist.
- Report defects to supervisors and ensure vehicles are refueled and kept clean.
- Ensure proper use and conservation of vehicles to minimize damage.
Administrative Duties:
- Register passengers for trips and maintain accurate logbooks with updated hours and activities.
- Record and report incidents, accidents, or near-misses to supervisors (Line 84/822030).
- Complete job cards and comply with collection times.
Training and Engagement:
- Participate in Daily Safety Sessions (DSS) with supervisors and HST teams at Unitrans parks or Vulcan Site.
- Engage in ongoing training to enhance driving skills and knowledge of company policies.
Route and Policy Adherence:
- Follow assigned routes without unauthorized deviations or stops.
- Access only authorized locations and respect signage and speed limits.
- Uphold Unitrans’ code of conduct and customer SMS policies.

Minimum Requirements

Education: Grade 12 (Matric) or National Certificate.
Licenses: Valid driver’s license categories CE – G, CE – PG, or C – G with a Professional Driving Permit (PrDP).
Experience: Minimum 5 years of experience as a professional bus driver in a similar role.
Knowledge and Skills:
- Mastery of defensive and preventive driving techniques.
- Strong knowledge of South African traffic laws and regulations.
- Familiarity with Unitrans Passenger rules, HST regulations, and the driver’s manual.
- Effective communication skills for professional interaction with passengers and supervisors.
- Attention to detail for vehicle inspections and incident reporting.
- Excellent time management to ensure punctual service delivery.
